What Would Jesus Ask? Part 1

This past Sunday, we returned to our series in Mark’s Gospel. The title of the message was, “What Would Jesus Ask?” In this text we see Jesus confronting organized religion. When I looked at the clock and it was ten minutes until noon and we were only about to finish point one (Jesus Confronting the Problem of Tradition), I decided that this would be a two part message. Tradition can be good, but it also can be a killer. Jesus constantly upset the status quo. You can listen to this message by following this link or visit our sermons page.

Caleb’s Peru Mission Trip Itinerary

The following is a general itinerary for our trip. Please remember that plans change frequently on the Amazon and that we will need to remain flexible as things are changed many times – and then a few more times.

Thursday, May 29th

We have 3 groups flying today: the Florida group will begin their trip by flying out of Miami at 01:45AM, 1 team member will already be in route as he left on Wednesday and the rest of the team will be departing from Raleigh, NC at 06:45AM. There are 6 different flight itineraries for our group as we make our way to Iquitos – please see your group’s Flight Itinerary for detailed flight information.

Friday, May 30th

IQUITOS, Peru

Lord willing, the Florida group will have arrived in Iquitos Thursday (5/29) evening. The rest of the team are scheduled to arrive in Iquitos early Friday (5/30) morning. We will spend most of the day and probably some of the night rounding up supplies and food and cleaning & loading the boat. In the evening, we will spend some time in the Word and in prayer and then catch up on some much needed sleep.

Saturday, May 31st

Amazon River, Peru: Pevas

We will leave Iquitos on our boat early morning (our team is made up of 14 from the USA and 6 nationals from Peru & whomever else joins us on the way down the river!) and spend most of the day traveling approximately 150 miles down the Amazon River to the village of Pevas. We are scheduled to do a children’s service and a church service in the evening.

Sunday, June 1st

Amazon River, Peru: Pevas & Pucaurquillo

We will be split up in several groups in the morning – 1 group will be meeting and having a Bible study with the young people (ages 15+) from a school, a 2nd group will be teaching a group of women (I don’t know all the details of this yet) and the 3rd group will be holding a main church service.

In the afternoon, we will head up the Rio Ampiyacu a short distance to the village of Pucaurquillo where we are scheduled to do a children’s service and a church service in the evening.

There will probably be a soccer game in one of the villages at some point in the afternoon.

Monday, June 2nd

Amazon River, Peru: Santa Lucia

We will head out on the river early in the morning for the village of Santa Lucia. Our schedule is to have a morning children’s vacation Bible school class and an evening church service. Soccer in the afternoon.

Tuesday, June 3rd

Amazon River, Peru: Canton

Our plan is to be back on the river first thing in the morning and travel to the village of Canton. Our schedule is to have an afternoon children’s vacation Bible school class and an evening church service. Soccer will depend on the time of our arrival.

Wednesday, June 4th

Amazon River, Peru: Colonia de Oran

Colonia de Oran isn’t that far up the river from Canton – so we won’t be on the River that much today. We plan to arrive in Colonia de Oran in time for an afternoon game of soccer and then have an evening children’s vacation Bible school class and an evening church service.

Thursday, June 5th

Amazon River, Peru: San Pedro de Marupa

Again, San Pedro de Marupa isn’t a great distance away – so our schedule will be the same as in Colonia de Oran. We plan to arrive in San Pedro de Marupa in time for an afternoon game of soccer and then have an evening children’s vacation Bible school class and an evening church service.

Friday, June 6th

Amazon River, Peru: Caballo Cochilo

Our last village of the trip that we will be holding services in – we are scheduled to hold an evening children’s vacation Bible school class and an evening church service.

Saturday, June 7th

Iquitos, Peru

Heading back up the rest of the river to Iquitos. We will probably stop in 1 or 2 villages for an hour or so as we might need to make arrangements and preparations for our next team that will be down in a week hosting a Women’s conference for several of the churches in the villages.

Our evening meal should be at a restaurant in Iquitos and you should have a ½ way warm shower and an all the way good night sleep in a ½ way real bed.

Sunday, June 8th

Iquitos, Peru

We will be working in Pastor Gallardo’s church in the morning and possibly another church. Pastor Gallardo is still working on the schedule for this day.

Monday, June 9th & Tuesday, June 10th

Iquitos, Peru; Lima, Peru; United States/Home

This is the day to visit the markets and buy souvenirs. We will fly out of Iquitos in the afternoon and then fly out of Lima overnight for home.

See your Flight Itinerary for detailed flight information.

Again, please remember this schedule is a general outline/plan – it will probably change somewhat once we arrive and a few more times after that. Travel up and down the river takes time – there are no roads to these villages, the current is very strong and the boat doesn’t go fast. So a couple of our days will consist of quite a bit of time traveling on the boat. This is great because it gives you plenty of time to spend with our team members and the Nationals we will be working alongside. It is also a great time to read your Bible, have devotions and pray.

We have a ‘buffer’ day in the last 3 days so we can stay on the river for an extra day if needed.

WCA Teams Finish Second

We had an exciting day on Saturday. Bethany’s soccer team began their game against Wake Christian for the state championship at noon. I was able to watch up until halftime where the score was 0-0. I then walked over to the baseball game where Caleb’s team was playing Wake Christian for the state championship. Joanna stayed at the soccer game. After a few minutes she called my on my cell phone to tell me that Wake scored. They went on to win 2-0. The baseball game was really tough for our guys. I believe they spent all of their energy getting to the championship. They didn’t have much left and lost 12-0. We congratulate the Chargers for a great year. Second place in the state isn’t bad at all.

Bethany and Caleb are in the State Championship Games

Bethany’s soccer team from Wilson Christian Academy won their semi-final match against Gospel Light of Walkertown. At the end of regulation the score was tied 1-1. They played two ten minute extra periods followed by two five minute sudden death playoffs. Finally it went down to penalty kicks where Wilson Christian scored three and Gospel light scored zero. Our team plays Wake Christian at noon. For a write up on the game go to the Wilson Daily Times story. You can view photos of the match at photographer Jack Cleary’s website.

Caleb’s WCA Baseball team won their semi-final game against number one seed from the West, Vandalia Christian. They won their game 8-4. This is the first time Wilson Christian varsity baseball has competed in the baseball championship in twenty-two years. They will play Wake Christian at 12:30 p.m. For a write up on their game last night you can go to the Wilson Daily Times story.

.

In additional news, Abigail and Hannah’s undefeated soccer team plays soccer at 2:00 p.m. today. Unfortunately Joanna and I have not mastered omnipresence yet.

WCA to Host State Tournaments

Wilson Christian Academy will host the NCCSA State Tournaments for girls soccer, girls softball, and boys baseball. Caleb will be playing in the baseball tournament and Bethany will be playing in the soccer tournament. Caleb went 3-3 in hitting and drove in two RBI’s and was awarded a game ball by the coach in their win last night against Greenville Christian. Bethany is playing varsity soccer as a 7th Grader. She played the entire game in a 1-0 win over Friendship Christian last night. Games begin on Friday at Wilson Christian Academy. Check out the Wilson Daily Times article about both of the wins.
